ILUMA i ONE in Mumbai: A One-Piece Device for the Daily Commute

Mumbai commuters develop a sixth sense for their pockets. Phone, wallet, keys, pass, tap, tap, tap, as you squeeze out of a packed compartment at Dadar. Anything extra is one more thing to drop, leave behind or have knocked out of your hand. That's the case for the ILUMA i ONE, the one-piece member of the ILUMA family: it cuts what a heated-tobacco user carries down to a single object. Here's what that means in practice.
One piece versus two
Heated-tobacco devices have often come in two parts: a holder that heats the stick, and a pocket charger the holder sits in to recharge. The ILUMA family still includes two-piece models, the ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME, sold elsewhere. The ILUMA i ONE puts everything in a single body.
| Two-piece design | ILUMA i ONE | |
|---|---|---|
| Items to carry | Holder and pocket charger | One device |
| Parts to separate before use | Take the holder out | None |
| Parts to keep together | Two | One |
| Things to leave behind on a train seat | Two | One |
For a commuter, the last row is the one that matters.
How it sits in a pocket
The ILUMA i ONE measures 122.4 × 30.6 × 16.3 mm and weighs 73.9 g. That's slim enough for most pockets, but on a Mumbai commute, *which* pocket matters more than size.
- Front trouser pocket: the best everyday spot. It's in front of you in a crowd, where you can feel it.
- Shirt pocket: fine when you're seated at work, risky when you're bending to get off a train or leaning over a counter.
- Back pocket: avoid. You'll sit on it in the cab, and in a crush it's the easiest pocket to lose things from.
- Bag: a zipped inner compartment, not the open outer pocket. On monsoon days, inside a zip-lock pouch.
- Same pocket as your phone: avoid. They'll scratch each other, and you'll pull one out with the other.
The cap is your commute armour
The ILUMA i ONE has a sliding cap over the opening where the TEREA stick goes. Slide it toward the light end to open; slide it back to close.
On a commute, keep it closed whenever the device is in a pocket or bag. Pockets collect lint, bags collect crumbs and grit, and rain finds its way into everything in July. A closed cap keeps all of that out of the opening, and that's the part that needs to stay clear for a stick to go in properly to the line.
Make it a reflex: stick out, cap closed, device away.
What you don't carry anymore
- No charger case. About 20 sessions per full charge means most people charge once a day, at home or at the desk, and never carry a charger at all.
- No cleaning tools. SMARTCORE induction means there is no heating blade, so there is no cleaning routine.
- No lighter. The device heats the stick itself.
What you still carry: the device and a pack of TEREA. Take one pack for the day, not several.
Starting a session when you've stepped off the train
Once you're out of the station and somewhere smoking is allowed:
- Hold the button for 4 seconds; the four lights fade on.
- Slide the cap open.
- Insert a TEREA stick until the line on the filter meets the top. It vibrates and starts heating.
- About 20 seconds later, a second vibration and four steady lights mean it's ready.
A session lasts up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, and FlexPuff can add up to 4 puffs. Don't use it on trains, platforms, buses or anywhere smoking isn't allowed. For more on fitting sessions into a Mumbai day, see IQOS in Mumbai.
Charging on a commuter's schedule
Charging takes about 90 minutes over USB-C. Two routines work well:
- Overnight at home, so you leave with a full battery.
- At your desk in the morning, if you forgot. Ninety minutes later, you're full for the rest of the day.
If you're a heavy user with a long journey home, plug in at your desk for the last hour or so of the working day. More detail in how to charge the ILUMA i ONE.
Choosing a finish for the commute
Midnight Black is the most discreet. Leaf Green and Breeze Blue are easier to find at the bottom of a bag. Electric Purple is the boldest. The device is the same in all five. See them on the ILUMA i ONE page: ₹4,990, or ₹5,290 for Electric Purple. Order on iqoser.in; checkout shows the delivery options for your pincode.
The ILUMA i ONE is for adults who already smoke. It's not risk-free, and TEREA contains nicotine, which is addictive. If you're thinking about stopping altogether, our quit-smoking guide is the place to start.
Questions
Does the ILUMA i ONE have a separate charger case?
No. It's one piece. You charge the whole device over USB-C, and a full charge gives about 20 sessions.
Where should I keep it on a crowded train?
In a front trouser pocket or a zipped inner bag compartment, with the cap closed, and never in the same pocket as your phone.
Why should I keep the cap closed?
It keeps lint, grit and rain out of the opening where the stick goes.
Is the ILUMA i ONE the same as ILUMA i?
No. ILUMA i is a two-piece design with a holder and pocket charger. The ILUMA i ONE is a single piece.
