IQOS in Delhi: Smog Season, Closed Windows and Smoking at Home

Every year, somewhere between late October and January, the haze settles over Delhi and the routine changes. The balcony stops being pleasant, windows stay shut, air purifiers hum in the bedroom, and a lot of smokers end up lighting up indoors more than they'd like. If you're an adult smoker in a Delhi flat and you've been wondering whether an ILUMA i ONE changes that picture, here is what it does and doesn't change.
What changes when nothing is burning
The ILUMA i ONE heats a TEREA stick with induction instead of setting tobacco alight. In a closed room, that difference shows up in a few concrete ways.
| In a closed flat | Cigarette | ILUMA i ONE |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke haze in the room | Yes | No smoke; an aerosol instead |
| Ash on tables, sofas, floors | Yes | None |
| Lighter or matches | Needed | Not needed |
| Stubs to dispose of | Burnt butts | A used stick, which you still need to bin |
| Smell on curtains and cushions | Builds up over a season | Different and fades faster, but not zero |
| Ashtray to wash | Yes | No |
Two of those matter a lot in winter. No ash means no grey dust on the bedside table. No smoke means the stale smell that settles into upholstery over a closed-window season is far less of an issue, although the stick and the aerosol still have their own smell while you use it.
What doesn't change: the aerosol is not nothing
This is the part most marketing skips. What you exhale from a heated stick is an aerosol, and it carries nicotine and other chemicals. People in the same room breathe some of it. The effects of that second-hand aerosol over time aren't well understood, and nobody can tell you it is harmless for the people around you.
So the honest advice for a Delhi winter is the same as it would be with cigarettes:
- Ask the people you live with, every time the arrangement changes. A flatmate who was fine in October may not be fine in December.
- Keep it away from children and anyone pregnant. Pick a room they don't use, or step out.
- Don't use it in a bedroom someone else sleeps in, or in the room where the air purifier is working hardest for everyone.
- Ventilate when you can. On days the air outside allows it, open a window after a session.

Setting up a winter routine at home
A few habits make indoor use more considerate and tidier:
- Pick one spot. One corner or one room, ideally near a window. It keeps the smell contained and makes it easy to remember where the device is.
- Keep a small lidded bin there for used sticks. They're cooler and tidier than cigarette butts but still shouldn't sit in an open dish.
- Charge it in that same spot. About 90 minutes over USB-C fills the battery, and a full charge runs about 20 sessions, so one charge usually lasts more than a day at home.
- Close the cap after every session. Slide it shut so nothing gets into the opening.
- Store TEREA packs away from room heaters. Delhi homes run heaters and geysers hard in winter; packs and the device should sit well away from both.
Cold mornings and the device
Delhi winter mornings are cold rather than freezing, so the ILUMA i ONE doesn't need special treatment. Keep it indoors overnight rather than on a cold balcony ledge, and don't put it on top of a heater to "warm it up". Room temperature is what it wants.
Which finish suits a winter flat
The device is the same in every finish. Midnight Black is the least noticeable on a dark side table; Breeze Blue and Leaf Green are easier to spot when you've put it down somewhere. You can compare all five on the ILUMA i ONE page. Breeze Blue, Leaf Green, Digital Violet and Midnight Black are ₹4,990; Electric Purple is ₹5,290.

Before you decide
The ILUMA i ONE is for adults who already smoke. Switching completely from cigarettes reduces exposure to many harmful chemicals compared with smoking, but lower exposure hasn't been shown to mean lower risk of disease, it is not risk-free, and it contains nicotine, which is addictive. If the smog season has you thinking about stopping altogether, that's the better move, and our Delhi quit-smoking guide lists local support.
Questions
Does IQOS leave a smell in a closed room?
There's a smell while you use it, from the stick and the aerosol, but it's different from cigarette smoke and fades faster. It isn't zero, so ventilate when you can.
Should my family worry about IQOS aerosol?
No. The aerosol contains nicotine and other chemicals, and its long-term effect on bystanders isn't well understood. Keep it away from children and pregnant people and ask before using it near others.
How long does the battery last if I only use it at home?
About 20 sessions per full charge, and a full charge takes about 90 minutes over USB-C.
Does the ILUMA i ONE need cleaning in winter?
No. It has no heating blade, so there's no cleaning in any season. Just keep the cap closed between sessions.
