IQOS FlexPuff Explained: Up to 4 Extra Puffs, and When You Get Them

Fourteen puffs is the standard length of a session on the ILUMA i ONE, within a time limit of up to 6 minutes. FlexPuff is the reason some of your sessions seem to go a little further. It's a small feature, but it confuses people because it doesn't happen every time and there is nothing to switch on. Here is what it does and how to think about it.
What FlexPuff does
FlexPuff can add up to 4 extra puffs to a session, on top of the standard 14. It works automatically. You don't press anything, choose a setting or change how you insert the stick.
According to IQOS's own support pages, the device analyses how the stick is being used and, depending on your puffing, may give you those extra puffs. Whether it activates, and how many extra puffs you get, depends on how you use each stick.
The numbers in one place
| What happens | |
|---|---|
| Standard session | Up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first |
| FlexPuff | May add up to 4 more puffs, within the same time limit |
| Most a session can give | 18 puffs, if FlexPuff adds all 4 and time hasn't run out |
| Warning before the end | One vibration and a pulsing bottom light: about 30 seconds or 2 puffs left |
The detail people miss is the time limit. IQOS describes FlexPuff as extra puffs within the session of up to 6 minutes. It adds puffs, not minutes.
Why it doesn't always activate
IQOS's support pages give a few reasons FlexPuff might not kick in:
- Large puffs. If you take big, long puffs, more of the stick is used up in each one, and FlexPuff is unlikely to activate.
- Individual patterns. IQOS says activation and the number of extra puffs depend on individual usage, so the extra puffs may not apply to every person or every session.
- Time. If you puff slowly and the 6 minutes run out, the session ends regardless of puff count.
None of these is a fault. If one session gives you 14 puffs and the next gives you 16, the device is working as designed.
How to read it in the lights
You don't need to count anything. The four-light status bar tells you where you are, whether or not FlexPuff is involved:
- After preheat, four steady lights and a second vibration mean you can start.
- As the session runs, the lights switch off from top to bottom.
- When about 30 seconds or 2 puffs remain, you feel one vibration and the bottom light pulses.
The last-puffs warning works the same with or without FlexPuff, so the simplest habit is to ignore puff counting and watch for that pulse. Our lights reference lists every pattern.
Should you change how you puff?
IQOS's advice is not to focus on your puffs and to let the system work automatically, and we'd agree. Trying to engineer extra puffs turns a session into a chore. Take the puffs that feel natural.
What FlexPuff is not:
- Not a setting. There's nothing to turn on or off on the ILUMA i ONE.
- Not a promise. Some sessions will have extra puffs and some won't.
- Not a reason to use more. One stick is still one session.
FlexPuff in a busy day
For people who take their sessions in short breaks, FlexPuff mostly means the session feels a little less rushed when you are puffing gently. If your breaks are short, the bigger factor is the 6-minute limit. The IQOS guide for Mumbai looks at how a 6-minute, 14-puff session fits long commutes and short breaks.
If sessions feel too short
A session ending at 14 puffs, or before 6 minutes because you took big puffs, is normal. If sessions consistently end well short of that, charge the device fully and try again with a fresh stick, then see our troubleshooting checklist. Persistent faults should go to official IQOS support.
The usual reminder
FlexPuff changes how many puffs a stick can give, nothing more. TEREA contains nicotine, which is addictive, and heated tobacco is not risk-free. For the basics of a session from start to finish, see how to use the ILUMA i ONE.
Questions
How many extra puffs does FlexPuff give?
Up to 4 on top of the standard 14, depending on how you puff. Some sessions won't get any.
Does FlexPuff make a session longer than 6 minutes?
No. The extra puffs fall within the same session time of up to 6 minutes.
How do I turn on FlexPuff on the ILUMA i ONE?
You don't. It works automatically when the device decides your puffing allows it.
Why didn't I get extra puffs this time?
Large puffs make FlexPuff unlikely to activate, and it depends on individual use, so it won't appear in every session.
