IQOS ILUMA i ONE Lights Meaning: A Reference Table

By the iqoser team · Updated · 5 min read

ILUMA i ONE in Midnight Black showing its four-light status bar

Keep this page for the moments you glance at your device and aren't sure what it's telling you. It is built as a lookup: find what you're seeing in the first table, read across to what it means and what to do. The second table covers the opposite problem, when the pattern you expected doesn't show up. If you want the full routine explained from start to finish instead, our guide to using the ILUMA i ONE does that.

Lookup: what you see, what to do

What you see What you feel What it means What to do
Four lights fade on after you hold the button Nothing The device is on Slide the cap open and insert a TEREA stick
Lights filling from bottom to top, with the filling light pulsing One vibration when the stick goes in Preheating, about 20 seconds Wait; don't puff yet
Four steady lights A second vibration Ready Start puffing
Lights switching off from top to bottom Nothing The session is running down (up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs) Carry on as normal
Bottom light pulsing One vibration About 30 seconds or 2 puffs left Take your last puffs
Lights out at the end of a session Nothing The session has ended Pull the stick out and slide the cap closed

All the lights on the ILUMA i ONE are white. There are no coloured lights on this device.

When the expected light doesn't appear

Most confusion comes from waiting for a pattern that never arrives. Here is what to check at each stage.

You expected But Try this
Four lights to fade on Nothing lit up Hold the button for a full 4 seconds, not a quick press. If still nothing, charge it over USB-C.
One vibration as the stick went in No vibration, no filling lights Check it's a TEREA stick, pushed in until the line on the filter meets the top, with the cap fully open toward the light end.
A second vibration after preheat The lights are still filling Preheat takes about 20 seconds. Give it the full time.
The session to last longer It ended at 14 puffs, or before 6 minutes Normal. Large puffs use up a session faster, and FlexPuff's extra puffs don't apply every time.
A warning before the end You didn't notice one The warning is a single vibration with a pulsing bottom light. Keep the device in your hand during the last part of the session.

If a check doesn't help, our troubleshooting checklist goes further, and persistent faults should go to official IQOS support.

Three vibrations, one session

If the device is in your hand and you aren't looking at it, the vibrations alone tell you most of what you need:

  1. First vibration: the stick has been detected and heating has started.
  2. Second vibration: preheat is done, start puffing.
  3. Third vibration: you are on your last 30 seconds or 2 puffs.

That's the whole vocabulary. Once you know it, you'll rarely need to look at the lights at all.

Common misreadings

  • "The lights are filling, so it's ready." Not yet. Filling and pulsing is preheat. Wait for all four to be steady and the second vibration.
  • "A light went off, so something is wrong." Lights switching off from the top during a session is normal. It's the countdown.
  • "The bottom light is pulsing, so the battery is low." During a session, a pulsing bottom light with a vibration is the last-puffs warning.
  • "I missed some puffs because of FlexPuff." FlexPuff can add up to 4 puffs but doesn't always activate. The lights count down the same way either way. Our FlexPuff guide explains why.

If you see something that isn't listed

The tables above cover the patterns of a normal session. If your device shows a pattern that isn't described here, or behaves in a way you don't recognise, don't guess and don't keep trying sticks. Check the official IQOS support resources for your device, which describe every status pattern in full. For battery life and charging habits, see our charging guide.

The ILUMA i ONE is for adults who already smoke or use nicotine. TEREA sticks contain nicotine, which is addictive, and heated tobacco is not risk-free.

Questions

What does it mean when the lights on my ILUMA i ONE are pulsing upward?

The device is preheating the stick. It takes about 20 seconds. Wait for four steady lights and a second vibration before puffing.

Why are the lights going off one by one during use?

That is the session countdown. Lights switch off from top to bottom as the session runs down.

What does a pulsing bottom light mean?

If it comes with one vibration during a session, about 30 seconds or 2 puffs remain.

Why didn't my ILUMA i ONE vibrate when I inserted a stick?

Check that it's a TEREA stick inserted to the line, the cap is fully open and the device is charged. HEETS won't be detected.

Can the ILUMA i ONE lights show colours?

No. The status lights are white only.
