"I want to cut down" is one of the most common things smokers say, and it usually means something real: a cough that won't go, a child who has started asking questions, a doctor's comment that stuck. If you're in Lucknow and that's where you are, this guide is the honest version of your options. We sell heated tobacco, and we'll still tell you that it isn't the first thing to reach for.

The options, in the right order

Option What it means Where it stands
1. Quit completely Stop all tobacco and nicotine The best outcome, with free support available
2. Quit with help Nicotine gum, lozenges or patches from a pharmacy, or medicine from a doctor, plus counselling Proven to raise your chances of quitting
3. Cut down towards a quit date Fewer cigarettes each week, with a fixed date to stop Useful as a step, not as the end point
4. Switch completely to heated tobacco Replace every cigarette with a TEREA stick Reduces exposure to many harmful chemicals; not risk-free, still addictive, not a quit aid
5. Use both Some cigarettes, some heated tobacco Keeps you breathing smoke; doesn't deliver the exposure reduction

Notice where "cut down" sits. Smoking fewer cigarettes still means smoking, and the real benefits come from stopping. Cutting down works best as a ramp towards a quit date rather than a new normal. Our cut-down plan shows how to build that ramp.

Start with quitting

If any part of you wants to stop altogether, start there.

  • National Tobacco Quit Line: 1800-112-356 (toll-free). Counsellors help you plan.
  • mCessation: give a missed call to 011-22901701 to sign up for free text-message support. Both are listed on the Health Ministry's mCessation page.
  • Pharmacy NRT: nicotine gum, lozenges and patches are sold in pharmacies across Lucknow.
  • Prescription options: varenicline and bupropion need a doctor.
  • Local support: our Lucknow quit-smoking guide lists cessation centres we've confirmed.

What "switching completely" actually means

If you're an adult who has decided you will keep using nicotine, it's worth understanding what the evidence for heated tobacco is about. Studies, including Philip Morris's own and some independent ones, have measured much lower levels of many harmful chemicals in heated-tobacco aerosol than in cigarette smoke. People who switch completely show reduced exposure to those chemicals.

"Completely" is doing the heavy lifting. It means:

  • No cigarette with the morning chai.
  • No cigarette "just at the wedding" or "only after dinner".
  • No cigarette borrowed from a friend at Hazratganj because the device was charging at home.

Even then, lower exposure has not been shown to mean a lower risk of disease, the aerosol still contains nicotine and other chemicals, and it is not risk-free.

Why dual use doesn't work

Dual use is a common way for switching to go wrong. It usually starts small: the device for the day, cigarettes when out with friends. It feels like cutting down. But every cigarette still means breathing smoke from burning tobacco. Splitting your day between the two doesn't deliver the exposure reduction that studies of complete switching describe, and it can keep both habits alive.

If you find yourself dual-using, there are only two good directions: back towards quitting, or forward to switching completely. Staying in the middle gets you the cost of both and the benefit of neither.

What WHO says

WHO's position is that heated tobacco products are tobacco products, that all tobacco products pose health risks, and that reducing exposure to harmful chemicals does not make them harmless. It doesn't recommend heated tobacco as a way to quit; it recommends proven routes like quit lines and nicotine replacement therapy.

If you do switch, make it stick

  • Pick a switch date the way you'd pick a quit date, and get rid of cigarettes and lighters the night before.
  • Charge the device every night. About 90 minutes over USB-C gives about 20 sessions, so a flat battery is never your excuse.
  • Carry enough TEREA that you're never caught short. A pack holds 20.
  • Count your sticks. One stick is one session. If the count climbs, that's a sign to revisit quitting.
  • Tell someone you've switched, so a cigarette offered at a gathering is easier to turn down.

The ILUMA i ONE is ₹4,990, or ₹5,290 in Electric Purple, and the quit-smoking hub has the full set of quit routes. Order on iqoser.in; checkout shows the delivery options for your pincode.

Questions

Is cutting down on cigarettes enough?

Cutting down is a useful step but not the goal. The real benefits come from stopping completely, so set a quit date and use cutting down as the ramp towards it.

Does using IQOS and cigarettes together reduce exposure?

No. Every cigarette still means breathing smoke. The reduced exposure measured in studies applies only to switching completely.

Is IQOS a way to quit smoking?

No. It's a tobacco product, not a quit aid, and it's not risk-free. Quitting nicotine completely is the best choice.
