Quitting isn't one moment; it's a series of milestones, and each one has its own challenge. Knowing what's coming makes it easier to get past. If you're in Lucknow and ready to stop, this guide walks through the first three months, milestone by milestone, with what to expect and what to do at each stage. Giving up tobacco completely is the best thing a smoker can do for their health.

Before day one: set up

  • Pick a date within the next two weeks.
  • Save the National Tobacco Quit Line: 1800-112-356 (toll-free). Counsellors help you plan. It isn't open round the clock; if you hear a recorded message about hours, call back during the day.
  • Give a missed call to 011-22901701 to join mCessation, free text-message support. Both numbers are on the Health Ministry's mCessation page.
  • Buy NRT. Nicotine gum, lozenges and patches are sold in Lucknow's pharmacies. Our NRT guide explains how to use them.
  • Consider a cessation centre. In Lucknow:

- King George's Medical University (KGMU) has a tobacco cessation centre on the Health Ministry's list. - Balrampur Hospital has an Addiction Treatment Facility (OPD) under the government's de-addiction scheme; ask about tobacco support.

Call ahead to check timings and how to register. A doctor there can also discuss prescription medicines such as varenicline or bupropion.

Day one

What to expect: you'll notice every moment you used to smoke. The morning chai, the walk to the car, the break after a meeting.

What to do:

  • Throw out cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays the night before.
  • Start your NRT as directed.
  • Change small routines: chai in a different spot, a different route to work.
  • When a craving comes, wait it out. It usually rises and falls within a few minutes.

Days two and three

What to expect: for many people this is the toughest stretch. Irritability, restlessness, trouble concentrating and feeling hungrier are common withdrawal effects.

What to do:

  • Keep using NRT, especially the fast-acting gum or lozenge for sudden cravings.
  • Drink water, get some fresh air, keep snacks like fruit handy.
  • Tell the people around you that you're quitting, so they understand if you're short-tempered.
  • Call the quit line if you're struggling.

End of week one

What to expect: cravings are still there but often less frequent. You've proved you can get through a day without smoking.

What to do:

  • Look back at your hardest moments of the week and plan for them next week.
  • Work out what you've saved by not buying cigarettes, and set it aside.

Week two

What to expect: the routine starts to feel normal. The risk now is a strong trigger you haven't planned for.

Lucknow moments to plan for:

  • Evening chai with friends. Hold a cup, sit away from the smokers, and have your answer ready: "No thanks, I've stopped."
  • A big dinner out. Get up from the table when you finish and walk for a few minutes.
  • Foggy winter mornings. When the cold keeps you indoors, plan something for your hands.
  • Weddings. Late nights and relatives who smoke. Decide in advance how you'll handle it.

Month one

What to expect: many people feel they've "done it" here, and that's when overconfidence creeps in. A stressful day can bring a craving back unexpectedly.

What to do:

  • Keep using NRT for the full course recommended on the pack, not just until you feel better.
  • Don't test yourself with "just one". The habit outlasts the cravings.
  • If you slip, it's one cigarette, not a relapse. Don't buy a pack; carry on from the next hour.

Month three

What to expect: smoking is no longer part of your daily routine. Cravings are rare and usually tied to specific situations: drinking, stress, a smell, an old friend lighting up.

What to do:

  • Keep your plans for those situations.
  • Reward yourself with some of what you've saved.
  • If you've relapsed along the way, set a new quit date. Many people who stop for good needed more than one attempt.

For what changes in your body as the months pass, see what happens when you quit smoking, and if weight is a worry, quitting and weight gain.

A note on heated tobacco

We sell heated-tobacco devices, and we'll be honest: they aren't a quit aid. Heated tobacco contains nicotine, which is addictive, and it is not risk-free. WHO recommends quitting with proven support such as quit lines and nicotine replacement therapy. If you're quitting, quit fully.
