Quit Smoking in Chennai: Comparing Your Support Options

There's no single right way to quit, but there is a wrong one: trying to do it alone with no plan. If you're in Chennai and ready to stop, you have several kinds of help to choose from, and the best results usually come from combining two or three. Quitting completely is the best thing a smoker can do for their health. This guide lays out the options side by side so you can choose what fits.
The options at a glance
| Option | Cost | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Tobacco Quit Line | Free | Phone counselling on 1800-112-356 | Anyone, especially if you want to talk it through |
| mCessation | Free | Missed call to 011-22901701, then support by text | People who like small daily nudges |
| Tobacco cessation clinic | Varies; ask when you call | Face-to-face counselling, medicines, follow-up | Heavy smokers, past relapses, health worries |
| Nicotine replacement therapy | Pharmacy price | Gum, lozenges or patches in falling doses | Almost everyone who smokes daily |
| Prescription medicine | Doctor plus pharmacy | Varenicline or bupropion, prescribed by a doctor | People who need extra help with cravings |
| Family and friends | Free | Someone to check in and keep you honest | Everyone |
A strong combination for most people: NRT + the quit line or a clinic + one person at home who knows your quit date.
Option by option
The quit line
Call 1800-112-356, toll-free. A counsellor helps you pick a quit date, spot your triggers and plan for them. It isn't open round the clock; if you hear a recorded message about working hours, call back during the day.
mCessation
Give a missed call to 011-22901701 and you'll be registered for free text messages that support you through quitting. Both numbers are listed on the Health Ministry's mCessation page.
A tobacco cessation clinic
Chennai has two clinics we've confirmed:
- Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar. Runs a tobacco cessation clinic, one of the long-standing centres set up in Tamil Nadu, with support linked to its psycho-oncology department.
- Madras Medical College. Has a tobacco cessation centre offering cessation treatment and counselling.
Call ahead to check timings and how to register.
NRT from the pharmacy
Nicotine gum, lozenges and patches are sold in Chennai's pharmacies. Patches give a steady dose through the day; gum and lozenges deal with sudden cravings. Many people use a patch plus a fast-acting form; ask the pharmacist or doctor how to combine them. Follow the pack directions and complete the course. Our NRT guide goes into detail.
Prescription medicine
Varenicline and bupropion reduce cravings and withdrawal. They need a doctor, who will check whether they suit you. A cessation clinic is a natural place to ask.
Family and friends
Tell at least one person your quit date and ask them to check in during the first fortnight. If someone at home smokes, ask them not to smoke around you, and not to offer.
Chennai triggers, and what to do instead
- Morning filter coffee. If coffee and a cigarette go together, change one of them: coffee in a different room, or tea for the first couple of weeks.
- The OMR or GST Road commute. Long drives and bus rides invite a cigarette at the end. Keep gum in your bag and plan something for the first five minutes after you arrive.
- Humid evenings. Restlessness on a sticky evening often turns into a cigarette. An evening walk at Besant Nagar or the Marina, or an hour indoors under the fan with something to do, takes the edge off.
- After meals. Get up straight away, wash your hands, and step out for a short walk.
- Stress at work. Breathe slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth, five times. Cravings usually pass in a few minutes.
Slips happen
A cigarette after you've quit is a slip, not a failure. Don't buy a pack. Call the quit line, work out what triggered it, and carry on from the next hour. Most people who quit for good tried more than once.
A note on heated tobacco
We sell heated-tobacco products, and we're clear that they're not one of your options here. Heated tobacco isn't a quit aid, it contains nicotine, which is addictive, and it is not risk-free. WHO recommends quitting with proven methods like quit lines, counselling and nicotine replacement therapy, the ones in the table above.

Choose two options from the table and start them this week. For the full method, read our quit-smoking guide for India, and for what changes after you stop, what happens when you quit smoking.
