Quit Smoking in Hyderabad: Myths, Facts and Where to Find Help

Most smokers in Hyderabad have thought about quitting. What stops them usually isn't a lack of willpower but a set of beliefs about quitting that sound reasonable and aren't quite true. This page takes the most common ones, answers them honestly, and then sets out the local and national help available. Quitting completely is the best thing a smoker can do for their health, and you don't have to do it alone.
Myth 1: "I'll quit once work calms down."
Fact: work rarely calms down, and waiting for the perfect moment is the most common way people never start. Pick a date within the next two weeks instead. A busy schedule can even help, because a full day leaves less idle time for cravings. Plan ahead for the stressful moments rather than waiting for them to pass.
Myth 2: "I've smoked for too long for it to matter now."
Fact: it's never too late to benefit from stopping. WHO says the benefits of quitting apply to all age groups, even people who already have tobacco-related health problems. Your body starts to recover after you stop, however long you've smoked.
Myth 3: "Willpower is all you need."
Fact: willpower helps, but people who use support quit more successfully than those who go it alone. Support means counselling, the quit line, nicotine replacement therapy or prescription medicine, ideally in combination. It's not a sign of weakness; it's using what works.
Myth 4: "Nicotine gum and patches are just another addiction."
Fact: nicotine replacement therapy gives your body nicotine without tobacco smoke, in falling doses, so you can break the habit first and then taper off. Used as directed, it's a medical quit aid. Nicotine gum, lozenges and patches are sold in pharmacies across Hyderabad. Our NRT guide explains how to use them.
Myth 5: "I'll just cut down."
Fact: cutting down can be a useful step towards a quit date, but smoking fewer cigarettes still means smoking. The real benefit comes from stopping completely. If you want a gradual approach, use our cut-down plan with a fixed quit date at the end.
Myth 6: "The after-biryani cigarette is the one I'll never give up."
Fact: after-meal cravings are strong because the habit is tied to a routine, not because the cigarette is irreplaceable. Change the routine: get up from the table straight away, wash your hands and face, have a paan-free mouth freshener or chew gum, or take a short walk. Within a few weeks the link between the meal and the cigarette weakens.
Myth 7: "I slipped once, so I've failed."
Fact: a slip is one cigarette. Don't let it turn into a pack. Work out what triggered it, plan for that moment, and carry on. Many people who quit for good had several attempts first.
Where to get help in Hyderabad
Local tobacco cessation centres

Free national helplines
- National Tobacco Quit Line: 1800-112-356 (toll-free). Counsellors help you plan and stay on track. The line isn't open round the clock; if you hear a recorded message, call back during the day.
- mCessation: give a missed call to 011-22901701 for free text-message support. Both are listed on the Health Ministry's mCessation page.
Your doctor
Varenicline and bupropion are prescription medicines that reduce cravings and withdrawal. They need a doctor's assessment.
Hyderabad's heat and cravings
In the hot months, thirst and tiredness can feel a lot like a craving. Before you assume it's nicotine, drink a glass of water and sit somewhere cool for five minutes. Often the urge passes with the heat.
A note on heated tobacco
We sell heated tobacco, and it's still not the answer here. It's not a quit aid, it contains nicotine, which is addictive, and it is not risk-free. WHO recommends quitting with proven methods such as quit lines and nicotine replacement therapy. If you're quitting, quit fully.
