TEREA vs HEETS: Why the Sticks Aren't Interchangeable

By the iqoser team · Updated · 5 min read

A pack of TEREA Amber sticks, made for ILUMA devices only

TEREA and HEETS look like cousins: short tobacco sticks with a filter, sold in packs of 20, both made for IQOS devices. That resemblance is exactly why people mix them up. They are built for two different ways of heating tobacco, and each works only in the device it was designed for.

The one-line answer

TEREA is for ILUMA-family devices, such as the ILUMA i ONE. HEETS are for the older blade-heated IQOS devices. HEETS won't work in ILUMA, and TEREA must never be put into a blade device.

What's inside each, at a high level

HEETS TEREA
Made for Older IQOS devices with a heating blade ILUMA-family devices (induction)
How it is heated The device's blade goes into the tobacco and heats it A sealed metal element inside the stick is heated by the device's induction coil
Metal inside the stick None Yes, a sealed heating element
Works in ILUMA i ONE No Yes
Works in a blade device Yes Never use it in one

The key difference is that metal element. In a TEREA stick, the heating element is part of the stick itself, sealed inside the tobacco. The ILUMA device never touches the tobacco; it heats the element from outside with a magnetic field, and the element heats the tobacco around it. Our SMARTCORE induction guide explains how that works in plain language.

A HEETS stick has no element. It relies on the device supplying the heat directly through a blade.

Why HEETS won't work in ILUMA

ILUMA heats by induction, which needs metal to act on. Put a HEETS stick into an ILUMA device and there's nothing inside it for the coil to heat. There is no blade in ILUMA either, so there is simply no way for the device to heat a HEETS stick. It won't give you a session.

Why TEREA must never go into a blade device

This is the important one. A blade device works by pushing its heating blade into the stick. A TEREA stick has a sealed metal element in that space. The blade and the element aren't meant to meet, and IQOS's own support pages warn that using TEREA in earlier blade generations may damage the device.

So, simply: never put TEREA into an IQOS 3 DUO, an IQOS 2.4 or any other blade device. There is no upside to trying, and you risk breaking the device.

How to tell them apart

When sticks are out of the pack, they can look similar. Check these:

  1. The printed name. A TEREA stick is white with a coloured band printed "TEREA" at the mouth end. HEETS carry the HEETS name.
  2. The pack. TEREA packs are clearly labelled TEREA, with the blend name, such as Amber or Turquoise.
  3. How it sits in an ILUMA. Inserted to the line in an ILUMA i ONE, a TEREA stick shows only its coloured band above the top of the device.
  4. What the device does. A TEREA stick inserted properly into a charged ILUMA i ONE gives one vibration and starts preheating. If nothing happens, check what you've put in.

A household with both devices

If you are upgrading and still have an older blade IQOS, or you share a home with someone who uses one, a little organisation avoids mistakes:

  • Keep the sticks apart. Different drawer, different bag pocket, different shelf.
  • Don't decant. Keep sticks in their original packs so the name is always on the outside.
  • Finish old stock in the old device. Use up any HEETS in the blade device they were made for, rather than trying them in the new one.
  • Tell the people you live with. A quick "the white sticks with the TEREA band go in this one only" saves a broken device.

Our ILUMA vs IQOS 3 DUO guide covers the wider differences between the generations, including why there is no cleaning with ILUMA.

Choosing TEREA if you are new to ILUMA

If you are coming from HEETS, don't expect TEREA blends to be copies of your old flavours. There are seven TEREA blends on iqoser: three tobacco (Amber, Silver, Bronze), two menthol (Turquoise, Purple Wave) and two capsule blends (Sun Pearl, Oasis Pearl). The TEREA sticks guide compares all seven, and you can see them together in the TEREA collection.

Both kinds of stick contain nicotine, which is addictive, and neither is risk-free.

Questions

Can I use HEETS in the IQOS ILUMA i ONE?

No. HEETS have no metal element for the induction coil to heat, and ILUMA has no blade, so they won't work.

What happens if I put TEREA in an old IQOS?

Don't. TEREA contains a sealed metal element that isn't meant to meet a heating blade, and IQOS support warns it may damage the device.

How do I know a stick is TEREA?

It is white with a coloured band printed "TEREA" at the mouth end, and it comes in a TEREA-labelled pack.

Do TEREA and HEETS taste the same?

No. They are different product lines with different blends, so expect to try a few TEREA blends to find your favourite.
