ILUMA vs IQOS 3 DUO: What Changed Between the Generations

By the iqoser team · Updated · 5 min read

ILUMA i ONE in Leaf Green, cap open, ready for a TEREA stick

If you used an IQOS 3 DUO for years, the ILUMA generation will feel familiar in purpose and different in almost every detail. The core change is how the tobacco gets heated, and nearly everything else follows from that: different sticks, no cleaning, a different shape. This guide sets the two side by side so you can see what actually changes in daily use.

The comparison at a glance

IQOS 3 DUO ILUMA i ONE
How it heats A heating blade that the stick is pushed onto SMARTCORE induction; no blade
Sticks HEETS TEREA only
Cleaning Needed regularly to remove residue from the blade area None
Layout Holder plus pocket charger One piece, no separate holder or charger case

On top of those four differences, the ILUMA i ONE adds a few things of its own: heating that starts automatically when a stick goes in, a four-light status bar, and FlexPuff, which can add up to 4 puffs to a session.

From blade to induction

The IQOS 3 DUO and the generations before it heated the stick from the inside with a blade. You pushed the stick onto the blade, the blade got hot, and the tobacco around it heated up.

ILUMA does away with the blade. Each TEREA stick contains a sealed metal heating element. The ILUMA device has an induction coil that heats that element without touching it, so the tobacco is heated from within the stick itself. We explain the physics in plain language in our SMARTCORE induction guide.

The practical results: nothing in the device that can break off or bend, and nothing to scrape.

HEETS and TEREA don't cross over

This is the part that catches people out. The sticks are not interchangeable in either direction:

  • HEETS do not work in ILUMA. They have no metal element for the induction coil to heat.
  • TEREA must never go into a blade device. The sealed metal element isn't meant to meet a blade, and IQOS's own support pages warn it may damage the device.

If you are switching and have HEETS left over, use them up in your old device rather than trying them in the new one. Our TEREA vs HEETS guide shows how to tell them apart at a glance.

Cleaning: the chore that disappears

Blade devices collected residue around the heating blade over time, which is why cleaning sticks and regular cleaning were part of owning one. Skipping it tended to show up in the taste.

With ILUMA, there is no blade and the heating happens inside the sealed stick, so there is no residue to clean out. You still look after the device, keeping the cap closed and the port free of lint, but the cleaning routine is gone.

Everyday differences you'll notice

One device instead of two

The IQOS 3 DUO split the job between a holder and a pocket charger. The ILUMA i ONE is one piece. That means one thing to carry and nothing to lose, but it also means that when the battery runs down, the whole device needs a charge. A full charge gives about 20 sessions and takes about 90 minutes over USB-C.

Starting is hands-free

On the ILUMA i ONE, you don't press anything to begin heating. Insert a TEREA stick to the line and the device vibrates once and starts preheating. About 20 seconds later, a second vibration and four steady lights tell you it's ready.

A clearer countdown

The four-light status bar shows preheat filling up, then switches off from the top down as the session runs. One vibration and a pulsing bottom light warn you when about 30 seconds or 2 puffs remain.

Sessions and FlexPuff

An ILUMA session lasts up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs. FlexPuff can add up to 4 more puffs depending on how you puff.

What to weigh before switching

  • Your leftover HEETS. Finish them in the old device.
  • Taste. TEREA blends are not copies of HEETS flavours. Expect to try a few before you settle; our TEREA sticks guide compares all seven.
  • Format. If you liked having a separate holder and charger, know that the ILUMA family also includes two-piece models (ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME). iqoser sells the one-piece ILUMA i ONE.

For upgrade advice with a local flavour, the ILUMA i ONE guide for Gurgaon walks through the move from the 2.4 and 3 DUO era.

Switching devices doesn't change the basics: TEREA contains nicotine, which is addictive, and heated tobacco is not risk-free. If you have been thinking about stopping altogether, that remains the better choice.

Questions

Can I use my HEETS in an ILUMA i ONE?

No. HEETS don't work in ILUMA devices. Use them up in your old blade device.

Can I use TEREA in my IQOS 3 DUO?

No. Never put TEREA in a blade device; it isn't designed for it and may damage the device.

Does the ILUMA i ONE need cleaning?

No. With no blade and the heating element sealed inside each stick, there is no cleaning routine. Keep the cap closed and the port free of dust.

Is the ILUMA i ONE a two-piece device like the 3 DUO?

No. It is one piece. The ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME are the two-piece members of the ILUMA i family.
